Cunningham gives moonstone to the Moon and to Water, with traditional powers of love, divination, sleep, and protection. The protection is specifically the traveler's kind. Moonstone has a long folk association with journeys, and with sea journeys in particular, which is a correspondence that predates the crystal trade by centuries and comes from people who had genuine reason to want it.

The lunar association is not decorative. Moonstone's glow waxes and wanes as the stone turns in the light, which is the most direct piece of sympathetic logic in the whole mineral kingdom: a stone that appears to have phases. What causes the glow? Adularescence. Moonstone is built from alternating microscopic layers of two feldspars, and light scattering between those layers throws a soft sheen that appears to sit under the surface. It is structural, not a coating, and it moves as the stone turns.
