Obsidian is volcanic glass, lava cooled too fast for crystals, and snowflake obsidian is what happens when the glass gets a second chance: cristobalite, a white form of silica, crystallizing inside the black in the starburst patterns the trade named snowflakes, real mineralogy rather than paint or dye.
