Collection: Singing Bowls

Run a mallet around the rim of a singing bowl and the sound does not so much start as arrive, a single note that swells until the whole room seems to hum with it. People have been making bowls sing for a long time. The hammered bronze bowls of the Himalayas are centuries old; the crystal bowl is a recent cousin, born when someone noticed that the pure quartz crucibles made for growing computer chips rang like bells. Both do the same job. They give the mind one clear sound to rest on, which is why they have become the most popular instrument in meditation rooms, yoga studios, and sound baths. At Plentiful Earth we carry crystal singing bowls in frosted white quartz at eight and ten inches, a rainbow crystal bowl, and small five-inch bowls in assorted colors.

What Is a Singing Bowl Used For?

A singing bowl is used for meditation, sound healing, and clearing space. Practitioners strike or sing the bowl to open and close a meditation, to mark a moment of silence in a ritual, to settle a group before a class, and to clear the energy of a room or a set of crystals with sound instead of smoke. In sound healing each bowl's note is matched to a chakra, from C at the root to B at the crown, and bowls are played around or near the body. Many people simply find that a few minutes with a bowl slows their breathing and quiets a busy head.

What You'll Find Here

Frosted crystal singing bowls. Made from crushed quartz fused at very high heat, these white bowls produce a strong, sustained, pure tone that fills a room. The eight-inch bowl is the usual first bowl; the ten-inch bowl is deeper and louder, suited to groups.

Rainbow crystal bowl. An eight-inch quartz bowl with an iridescent finish, as much an altar piece as an instrument.

Small colored bowls. Five-inch bowls in assorted colors, light enough to hold in the palm and bright in pitch.

How Do I Play a Singing Bowl?

Set the bowl on its ring or a folded cloth on a stable surface. Tap the outside of the rim gently with the mallet to wake the note, then press the mallet against the outer rim and circle slowly and steadily, keeping even pressure, as if stirring a large pot. The sound builds on its own; if it rattles, slow down and ease off. Crystal bowls are loud and they are glass: never play one so hard that it becomes harsh, keep jewelry clear of the rim, do not stack them, and store each one where it cannot be knocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a crystal and a metal singing bowl?
Metal bowls are hammered or cast bronze with a warm, complex tone full of overtones. Crystal bowls are fused quartz with a single pure, penetrating note that sustains longer and carries farther. Metal suits personal practice; crystal is favored for sound baths and groups.

What size singing bowl should I start with?
An eight-inch crystal bowl is the common first choice: easy to play, a clear mid-range note, and loud enough for a room without being overwhelming.

What are crystal singing bowls made of?
Crushed quartz, about 99 percent pure silica, heated to several thousand degrees in a spinning mold. The frosted finish is the natural surface of the fused quartz.

Can a singing bowl cleanse crystals?
In crystal practice, yes. Sound is one of the gentlest cleansing methods and is safe for every stone, including the soft and water-sensitive ones. Set the stones near the bowl and let it sing for a minute or two.

Can a crystal singing bowl break?
Yes. It is quartz glass. Bowls crack from impact, from being played far too hard, and from another object vibrating against the rim. Handled with care they last for decades.

Which note goes with which chakra?
The common Western system runs C for root, D sacral, E solar plexus, F heart, G throat, A third eye, and B crown.
