What Is a Spell Candle?

A spell candle is any candle set aside for one working: you name an intention, often dress the candle with oil or herbs, and let it burn as the focus of the spell. Most spell candles are small, so the working can start and finish in one sitting. Color, shape, and any carving on the candle are chosen to match the intention.

Types of Spell Candles

Chime candles. Chimes are slim candles about ½ inch across, 4 or 5 inches long, sold in sets of 20 in every color, plus 10-inch sets of 6. They're the most common spell candle because they're inexpensive and small enough to burn down in a single sitting. Browse every color in Chime Candles.

7-inch ritual candles. These are made for one named intention: Uplifting, Vision, Prosperity, Lust, and Love. The Prosperity candle comes anointed and inscribed in Theban script. They burn at roughly an inch an hour, so plan for several hours or a few sittings.

Runic candles. The Guardian (protection) and Union (love and partnership) candles are 7 inches and carved with runes of the Elder Futhark, the old Germanic runic alphabet.

Figure candles. These are shaped for work centered on a person or a relationship: male and female figure candles in white, red, and black (6½ inches), a white bride-and-groom marriage candle, a white cat candle for Bast, and a black female genital candle.

Seven knob candles. A seven knob candle, also called a wishing candle, is about 6½ inches tall and stacked in seven knobs of wax. You burn one knob a day for seven days and repeat your wish each time. We carry them in black, green, red, and white.

How Do You Choose a Spell Candle?

By how long the working runs. Pick a chime for a spell you'll finish in one sitting, a 7-inch ritual or runic candle for a longer working over an evening or a few sittings, and a seven knob candle for a working you repeat every day for a week.

By intention. Pick a color that matches what you're working on, such as green for money, red for love and passion, black for protection and banishing, and white for any purpose. Our candle color meanings guide covers every color. A figure candle suits work focused on one person or a couple.

How Do You Use a Spell Candle?

Write or say your intention first. If you like, dress the candle with a little oil, rubbing from the middle toward each end, and roll it in dried herbs; our candle dressing guide walks through it. Stand the candle in a holder on a heat-safe surface, light it, and focus on your intention while it burns. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Chimes need a chime-size holder, which you'll find in Candle Holders, and a candle snuffer puts out a flame you plan to relight.

Spell Candle FAQ

What is a spell candle?
It's a candle set aside for one working. You name an intention, often dress the candle with oil or herbs, and let it burn as the focus of the spell. Most are small chime candles.

What size spell candle should I use?
Use a chime for a spell you'll finish in one sitting, a 7-inch ritual candle for a longer working, and a seven knob candle for a working you repeat daily for a week.

What color spell candle should I use?
Match the color to your intention: green for money, red for love, black for protection and banishing, and white for any purpose. White can stand in for any color you don't have.

Can I blow out a spell candle and relight it?
Many practitioners let a chime burn all the way down in one sitting. Larger candles can be put out between sittings; many use a snuffer rather than blowing the flame out.

Do I have to dress a spell candle?
No. Dressing with oil and herbs is a common extra step that adds focus, but a plain candle and a clear intention work too.

How do you burn a seven knob candle?
Burn one knob a day for seven days. Each day, light the candle, repeat your wish, let it burn down to the next knob, and snuff it.
