Amethyst carries one of the oldest names in the stone trade, and it is worth knowing where it comes from. The Greek amethystos means, roughly, not intoxicated. The Greeks associated the stone with Dionysus and carved drinking cups from it in the belief it would keep a person clear-headed through the wine. That is folklore, not pharmacology, and we tell it as folklore. It is also a very good clue to what the stone has always been asked to do: keep you in possession of yourself.

Cunningham files amethyst under Jupiter and the element of Water, and lists it for peace, courage, psychism, and protection. Modern practice largely agrees. It is the stone people reach for when they want a clear head and a settled mind, not a numbed one.

The chevron banding adds a second layer of symbolism that practitioners have taken up on their own: the white quartz reads as a boundary drawn through the purple, an edge inside the stone itself. If you work with amethyst for protection rather than dreaming, this is the cut to reach for.

1. Cleanse it on arrival with smoke, sound, or moonlight. Keep amethyst out of long direct sun, which fades the purple.
2. Wear it when you need to stay clear in a situation designed to muddle you.
3. Touch a bead and follow one chevron with your thumb when you feel yourself losing the thread. It is a small, physical way to come back.
4. Set it on the altar overnight when the week has been heavy, and put it back on in the morning.

What is the difference between chevron amethyst and regular amethyst?

Chevron amethyst is amethyst naturally banded with white quartz, so it is striped rather than solid purple. Same mineral, different formation, noticeably different look.

Does amethyst help with anxiety or sleep?

Those claims are everywhere and we are not going to make them. Amethyst has a long folkloric association with clear-headedness, which is a good and interesting story. It is not a treatment. For anxiety or sleep as medical concerns, speak with a doctor.

Will the purple fade?

It can, in sustained direct sunlight. Store it out of a sunny window and it will hold its color indefinitely.
