• Most carnelian on the market is heat treated, and a good deal of it is dyed agate. Heat treatment is an ancient and accepted practice in the trade rather than a defect, and we would rather name it than let you assume otherwise.
• Color can fade with sustained direct sunlight. A sunny windowsill is not the best long-term home.
• Care: wipe with a soft dry cloth. Remove before swimming and showering, mainly for the sake of the elastic.

Scott Cunningham files carnelian as projective, ruled by the Sun, elementally Fire, and lists protection, peace, eloquence, and courage among its powers. Eloquence is the one worth pausing on: carnelian has a long-standing association with speaking well and speaking bravely, which is why it turns up so often in work around difficult conversations and public speech.

The Egyptian use is real and documented. Carnelian appears in amulets and funerary jewelry, and the tyet amulet associated with Isis was frequently cut from it, chosen in part for a color that reads as blood and as life. That is archaeology rather than folklore, and it is the deepest verifiable root the stone has.

Much of what circulates about carnelian and the sacral chakra is twentieth century in origin, coming out of modern crystal literature rather than any older tradition. Plenty of practitioners work it that way today and find it useful; we simply would not tell you the association is ancient.

1. Cleanse it before first wear if that is your practice. Smoke, sound, moonlight, or a selenite plate all work well and none of them risk the elastic.
2. Wear it when you have something difficult to say. If you work with the eloquence association, holding the beads while you rehearse is a common and practical approach.
3. Hold it in a closed palm and state an intention plainly, then carry it through the day as a reminder of what you said.
4. Take it off for showers, swimming, and the gym. Elastic fails from repeated wetting long before the stone does.
5. Store it out of direct sunlight to keep the color it arrived with.

Is carnelian heat treated?

Usually, yes. Heating pale chalcedony to deepen the orange is an ancient practice that goes back millennia and is entirely standard in the trade. It is not considered a defect or a fake, but it is worth knowing, and some material sold as carnelian is dyed agate rather than heated chalcedony.

How can I tell it is real?

Hold a bead to a bright light. Carnelian is translucent and glows warmly at the thinner edges, and natural material usually shows a slightly cloudy or uneven distribution of color. Perfectly uniform, fully opaque beads are more likely to be dyed.

Will the color fade?

It can, with long exposure to strong direct sunlight. Store the bracelet out of a sunny window when you are not wearing it and the color will hold. Ordinary daily wear is not a problem.

What is carnelian traditionally used for?

Cunningham lists protection, peace, eloquence, and courage. The eloquence and courage associations are the most distinctive, which is why practitioners often reach for it around speaking, negotiating, and saying difficult things out loud.

Can I wear it every day?

Certainly. Chalcedony sits around 7 on the Mohs scale, so it handles daily wear well. The limiting factor is the elastic rather than the stone, so take it off for water and workouts and it will last a long time.
