What Is Moss Agate?

Moss agate is a translucent to milky white chalcedony, a quartz made of crystals too small to see, threaded with green, branching mineral inclusions that look like moss or fern. There is no plant inside the stone. The green is dendrites of manganese and iron oxides that crept into the silica as it formed from weathered volcanic rock, and because the stone has no concentric bands it is not a true agate, whatever its name says.
