What Is Banishing in Witchcraft?
Banishing is magic that sends something away: a spirit, a stubborn energy in a room, a bad habit, or a person who needs to leave your life. It is the opposite of drawing work. In ceremonial magic, banishing rituals clear a space before other work begins. In hoodoo and other folk traditions, banishing tends to be practical and targeted, with salts, powders, and oils laid where the person or trouble will meet them.
Banishing sits close to two other kinds of work. Protection keeps harm from reaching you in the first place, and uncrossing removes a jinx or curse already on you. Banishing is the push that moves something out.
What Banishing Supplies Are in This Collection?
This is a large collection, so here are the main groups you will find as you scroll.
Salts and minerals. Black salt (consecrated, a 1 lb bag, and a 1 oz packet), black Hawaiian sea salt, Dead Sea salt, sulfur powder (brimstone) in 1 oz, 4 oz, and 1 lb, activated charcoal powder, and consecrated saltpetre. Sulfur and black salt are the two most traditional banishing minerals.
Oils. Banishing oil blends from Espiritu and Envision Crystals, plus condition oils for specific jobs: Law Stay Away, Keep Away Trouble, Jinx Removing, Jinx Breaker, Love Breaker, Clean Sweep, Hot Foot, Against Evil, Dark Moon, and rue oil. Many come in sizes from 2 dram to 16 oz.
Powders. Hot foot powder in several sizes, jinx removing sachet powder, dragon's blood sachet powder, and Vesta ritual powder.
Waters, washes, and soap. Four Thieves vinegar, rue water and rue wash (agua de ruda), rue cologne, Dark Moon ritual spray, and Ohli~Way Break the Witchcraft soap.
Herbs and roots. Rue, black walnut hull, juniper berries, St. John's wort, angelica root, stinging nettle, Solomon's seal root, barberry root bark, and more, along with a curse breaker bath herb and two premixed banishing spell blends.
Curios, amulets, and kits. Coffin nails, black feathers, black velveteen bags, pocket spell bottles, a chicken foot charm, protective amulets including a hamsa and an evil eye hanger, Espiritu dragon's blood and bat's blood inks for petitions, two banishing ritual kits, and Miss Aida's book Hoodoo Cleansing and Protection Magic, one of several titles in our hoodoo and rootwork books.
You will also see black candles, Sree Vani incense in rue, protection, and dragon's blood, and a few protective jewelry and altar pieces that share tags with this work.
Which Banishing Supplies Should You Start With?
Black salt is the easiest place to start, because it works for almost any banishing job: sprinkle it across a threshold, along a property line, or around a candle. Our guide on how to make black salt covers the traditional method if you want to make your own.
Add a banishing oil to dress a black candle, and you have a complete basic working. If the goal is to move a specific person along, hot foot powder is the traditional hoodoo formula; our hot foot powder recipe explains how it is made and used. For a full step-by-step working, see our banishing spell to remove a harmful person.
If a person is threatening your safety, magic walks alongside practical help, never in place of it. Please reach out to local authorities or a domestic violence hotline.
How Do You Handle Sulfur, Saltpetre, and Hot Foot Powder Safely?
Sulfur, saltpetre, and hot foot powder all call for care with flame, skin, and lungs. Never burn sulfur: the smoke is sulfur dioxide, which is harmful to breathe. Use it as a dry powder in jars, sachets, or sprinkled outdoors instead.
Saltpetre (potassium nitrate) is an oxidizer that makes other things burn fast. Store it away from sulfur and charcoal, and never mix those three together, because saltpetre, sulfur, and charcoal combined make gunpowder.
Hot foot formulas usually contain hot pepper and sulfur. Wear gloves or wash your hands right after handling it, keep it away from your eyes, and don't lay it where pets or children walk.
What Is Four Thieves Vinegar?
Four Thieves vinegar is a herbal vinegar named for a European legend about thieves who robbed plague victims and were said to stay untouched thanks to their vinegar. In hoodoo and folk magic, it is a protection and banishing formula: added to floor washes, sprinkled at a doorway, or used to dress a petition. The bottle here is a conjure formula, not a food product.
How Is Rue Used in Banishing?
Rue (ruda) is one of the most widely used banishing and protection herbs, known across Mediterranean and Latin American folk practice as a guard against the evil eye and envy. You can use the dried herb in sachets and baths, rue water or rue wash to clean floors and doorways, and rue oil to dress candles.
Rue oil and rue water can make skin burn when it is later exposed to sunlight, so patch-test first, rinse off after a bath, and keep rue products off skin that will be in the sun. Rue is for washing, sachets, and dressing candles, not for drinking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between banishing and protection?
Banishing sends something away, while protection keeps harm from reaching you. Many practitioners banish first to clear a space or situation, then lay protection so the trouble doesn't return.
What is black salt used for?
Black salt is used for banishing and protection. It is sprinkled across doorways and property lines, placed around candles, or added to jars to keep unwanted people and energy away.
Can I burn sulfur for banishing?
No. Burning sulfur releases sulfur dioxide, which is harmful to breathe. Use sulfur as a dry powder in jars, sachets, or sprinkled outdoors instead.
What is hot foot powder?
Hot foot powder is a traditional hoodoo formula used to make an unwanted person move away. It usually contains hot pepper and sulfur, so wear gloves or wash your hands after use and keep it away from pets and children.
What is the difference between banishing and uncrossing?
Banishing pushes a person, spirit, or energy away from you, while uncrossing removes a jinx or curse that is already on you. Jinx removing oils and curse breaker baths are uncrossing tools; hot foot powder and banishing oil are banishing tools.
What herbs are used for banishing?
Rue, black walnut hull, juniper berries, stinging nettle, and St. John's wort are all traditional banishing and protection herbs. They are used dried in sachets, baths, floor washes, and loose incense.
Is banishing magic harmful?
Banishing is about distance, not harm. Most banishing work asks a person, spirit, or habit to leave your life and stay gone, and many practitioners word their spells so the person goes on to somewhere better for them.
