Book of Shadows, Grimoire, or Dream Journal?

A Book of Shadows is a witch's personal working book: spells, rituals, correspondences, and records, in your own hand. The name comes from Wicca in the 1950s, and today witches of every path keep one. A grimoire is the older, broader word for a book of magical instructions, and many witches use the two interchangeably. A dream journal is exactly what it sounds like, and it earns a place next to the other two because dreams are where a lot of the signs arrive.

Whichever you pick, the book that matters is the one you write. Every journal here is blank inside.

How to Choose

Bound leather suits a book you'll keep for years and hand down. A latch or cord keeps it closed on the altar. If you'd rather reorder pages and add printed sheets, a binder with our free journal pages is the practical choice, and many witches keep a binder as the working draft and copy finished pages into a bound book once a year.

What to Write First

Your name or craft name, the date, and one sentence about why. Then one page you'll actually use: a herb you work with, a moon phase you tracked, a card you pulled. Our guides above have thirty page ideas if the blank first page is the hard part.
