Polished malachite is safe to wear. Sealed under a polish, on your wrist, it is inert and there is nothing to worry about.

Powdered malachite is not safe. The copper content means dust is genuinely toxic. Do not grind it, do not sand it, do not carve it without proper protection, and above all do not put malachite in water you intend to drink. Crystal elixirs and gem waters made with malachite are a real hazard, not a theoretical one, and the practice circulates online anyway. Do not do it. Keep the beads out of mouths, which mostly means away from small children.

That combination looks odd until you know the history: malachite was one of the most valuable pigments in the ancient world, and the people who mined and traded it grew rich. A stone associated with commerce and with protection is a stone that made and guarded fortunes.

The Egyptians ground it for eye paint and for the green of tomb walls, and they associated the colour with new life and regeneration. The Russians built entire rooms out of it. It is a stone with a long and materially serious history, and it was prized for what it did rather than for what it symbolised.

Modern practice reads the banding as the stone's meaning: layers that record what has passed, patterns that repeat, the visible evidence of accumulated time. It is worked as a stone of protection and of taking things seriously.

1. Wear it into work. The commercial and protective correspondences pair naturally, and malachite is traditionally a stone for the parts of life that involve money and other people.
2. Cleanse it dry. Never with salt or water. Malachite is soft, it scratches easily, and it reacts badly to acids and prolonged moisture. Salt will damage the polish. Use smoke, sound, or moonlight.
3. Take it off before anything abrasive. At Mohs 3.5 it is softer than a steel key and softer than most other stones. It will lose to almost anything it knocks against.
4. Keep it stored separately. In a pouch, away from harder stones, which will mark it.
5. Roll the band on and off. Elastic fails at the stretch, not from age.

Can I put it in my water bottle? No. Please do not. This is the one thing not to do with malachite.
