What Is Amazonite?
Amazonite is the green to blue-green variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar, and the color comes from traces of lead and water locked in the crystal. It is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, opaque to faintly translucent, and often streaked with white albite, so no two tumbles match. The name is a small joke of history: it was named for the Amazon River, where green stones were once reported, but amazonite does not come from the Amazon. The classic sources are Colorado, the Ural and Ilmen mountains of Russia, Brazil, and Madagascar. Egyptian jewelers were cutting it into beads and amulets more than three thousand years ago, and it has never gone out of fashion since.
Amazonite Meaning
In crystal practice amazonite is the stone of calm and truth: worn at the throat for saying the true thing gently, kept on the desk for the long conversation, and carried by people who want to stop swallowing what they mean to say. Scott Cunningham lists it for gambling and success, which is why our coin-charm bracelets pair it with a Chinese coin, and the modern books put it at the throat and heart chakras for honest, kind speech. Its color does the rest; it is the stone people pick up first for the look of it and keep for the calm. The full lore, the zodiac, the five-stone comparison with aventurine, turquoise, chrysoprase, and jade, and the safety note are on our amazonite meaning page.

How to Use Amazonite
Practitioners wear amazonite at the throat or on the wrist before a hard conversation, set a point on the desk where the writing happens, and put a tumble in the pocket for the day that needs a steady voice. It sits at the throat position in a chakra layout and pairs with lapis, sodalite, and blue lace agate there; see our beginner guide to the seven chakras and our complete list of chakra crystals. Cleanse it with smoke, sound, moonlight, or a quick rinse and dry; it is hard enough for water but not for long soaks, and its color fades in strong sun. One rule matters: because its color comes from trace lead, amazonite is never used for elixirs or crystal water, and it is kept out of small children's hands.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is amazonite?
Amazonite is the blue-green variety of microcline feldspar, colored by traces of lead and water, 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is named for the Amazon River but is not found there; the classic sources are Colorado, Russia, Brazil, and Madagascar.
What is amazonite good for?
In crystal practice, calm and honest speech. It is worn at the throat and wrist before hard conversations, kept on the desk, and placed at the throat position in chakra layouts. Cunningham lists it for gambling and success, which is the reason for the coin-charm bracelets.
What chakra is amazonite?
The throat, for clear and kind speech, with the heart as its second placement in most modern books.
Can amazonite go in water?
A quick rinse and dry is fine. Do not soak it for long, do not leave it in strong sun, which fades the color, and never make an elixir or crystal water with it, because its color comes from trace lead.
What is the difference between amazonite and aventurine?
Amazonite is an opaque blue-green feldspar with white streaks; green aventurine is a translucent quartz with a glitter of mica inside. Amazonite leans blue and aventurine leans grass green, and they are used at different chakras, throat and heart.
Is amazonite expensive?
No. Amazonite is one of the more affordable colored stones: rough pieces and tumbles by the pound, bracelets for a few dollars, and only large polished free forms priced like specimens.
