Bells are close to universal. The triple moon is a different matter, and we should be accurate about it. Reading the moon's phases as maiden, mother, and crone is a modern construction, taking shape through Robert Graves in the mid twentieth century and entering Wiccan practice from there. It is now genuinely widespread and genuinely meaningful to a great many practitioners, but it is decades old rather than ancient, and we would rather say so than sell you a false pedigree.

What that means in practice is that this bell carries a symbol with real contemporary weight. Recent is not the same as hollow.

1. Ring once to open. Many practitioners use the bell as the first act of a working, marking the point where ordinary time stops and ritual time starts.
2. Let the sound finish before you speak. The tail of the ring is doing work, and talking over it wastes it.
3. Use it to clear a space by walking the perimeter and ringing at the corners, or at doorways and windows if that suits your practice.
4. Ring again to close, so the working has a definite end rather than trailing off. This matters more than people expect.
5. Wipe it down and store it dry. If you want it bright, polish occasionally; if you want it dark, simply leave it.

How loud is it?

Clear rather than loud. At two and a half inches it carries across a room comfortably without being startling, which is usually what you want indoors. It will not disturb neighbours through a wall.

Will the brass tarnish?

Yes, and fairly readily. Brass darkens with air, humidity, and the oils on your hands. A soft cloth and occasional polish keeps it bright. A great many practitioners prefer the darkened look and simply let it happen.

Can I use it to cleanse crystals?

Yes, and it is particularly useful for stones that must never touch water. Angelite, selenite, and hematite all fall in that category. Ring the bell close to them and let the sound do the work.

Is the triple moon an ancient symbol?

Not in this form. Maiden, mother, and crone mapped onto the lunar phases is a twentieth century construction that entered Wicca through Robert Graves. It is deeply meaningful in modern practice, but it is modern, and we would rather be accurate about that.

Can I clean the inside of the bell?

Wipe it with a dry cloth wrapped around a finger. Avoid running water through it, since moisture trapped around the clapper mount corrodes it and dulls the tone over time. Dry cleaning only is the safe rule here.
