The peace sign was drawn in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement, its lines taken from the semaphore letters N and D, and promptly escaped its origins to become the emblem of the hope in general, carried through the sixties and every decade since. A pocket token of it works the way worry stones always have: something small and solid to find with a thumb in a tense moment, a physical reminder of the intention a person actually holds. The pewter does no work of its own; the reaching for it is the practice, and that part is entirely, honestly yours.
