The scarab earned its place in Egyptian religion by observation: the dung beetle rolling its ball across the ground read, to Nile eyes, as the sun rolled across the sky, and the young beetles emerging from the ball as life out of apparent nothing. So Khepri, the scarab-headed god of the morning sun, became the emblem of becoming itself, and scarab amulets, carved by the tens of thousands, went into Egyptian life and Egyptian tombs as tokens of rebirth, strength, and the daily resurrection of the light. This print sets that oldest of renewal symbols on the wall with its prayer. The paper renews nothing on its own, as we say plainly of the poster shelf; it keeps three thousand years of the morning's own emblem in daily view.
