Sinai, Olympus, Kailash, Fuji: the list of holy mountains is very long and very widely spread, and the reason is partly practical. A mountain is where the ordinary world stops. You have to climb it, the climbing is hard, and what you find at the top is thin air and a long view. Traditions have read that as nearness to the divine for as long as there have been traditions.

What a mountain actually offers is perspective and endurance: it does not move, it does not hurry, and it makes everything at its base look smaller. That is a good thing to keep on a wall, particularly on the days when the base is where you are.
