Beryl, and hard enough to wear. Aquamarine sits around 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, harder than quartz, so it handles daily wear better than most pale stones.

• Most aquamarine on the market is heat treated to remove yellow tones and deepen the blue. This is standard practice in the trade rather than a defect, and we would rather name it than let you assume otherwise.

• Care: wipe with a soft dry cloth. Remove before swimming and showering, mainly for the sake of the elastic.

The name is Latin for sea water, and the association with sailors and safe passage is genuinely old. Aquamarine was carried on voyages as a protective stone and appears in Roman and later European accounts in connection with the sea, which is about as clear a documented folk association as a gemstone gets.

In contemporary practice it is worked most often for calm and for clear speech, and it turns up frequently in work around difficult conversations. That throat association is largely twentieth century, coming out of modern crystal literature rather than the older sea traditions, and we would rather draw that line than blur the two together.

Both threads point the same direction, which is probably why the stone has held its reputation. Safe passage and saying the thing plainly are not unrelated.

1. Cleanse it before first wear if that is your practice. Smoke, sound, moonlight, or a selenite plate all work and none of them threaten the elastic.
2. Wear it when you have something difficult to say, and hold the beads while you work out how to say it.
3. Some practitioners wear it while traveling, drawing on the older sea association. It is a small habit and costs nothing.
4. Take it off for showers, swimming, and the gym. Elastic cord fails from repeated wetting long before beryl does.
5. Store it out of direct sunlight to keep the color it arrived with.

Is aquamarine heat treated?

Usually, yes. Heating removes yellow tones and brings out a purer blue, and it is entirely standard in the trade rather than considered a fake. Untreated material with a strong natural blue exists but is far less common and priced accordingly.

How can I tell it is real aquamarine?

Genuine beryl is cool to the touch, hard enough to resist scratching from a steel blade, and usually shows slight variation in tone between beads. Very cheap, perfectly uniform, intensely blue beads are more likely dyed quartz or glass.

Will the color fade?

It can, with long exposure to strong direct sunlight, which is true of aquamarine generally. Ordinary daily wear is fine. Store it somewhere out of a sunny window and the color will hold for years.

Is 4mm too small?

It depends what you want from it. 4mm sits discreetly and stacks well under other bracelets or a shirt cuff. If you want the bracelet to be visible and substantial, a larger bead size is the better choice.

Can I wear it every day?

Yes. Beryl is harder than quartz and handles daily wear well. The elastic is the limiting factor rather than the stone, so take it off for water and workouts and it will last a long time.
