Here is the plain version. Most shiny grey hematite beads on the market, and effectively all strongly magnetic ones, are not natural hematite. The material is a manufactured magnetic compound, usually a synthetic ferrite, sold under the names magnetic hematite, hematine, or hemalyke.

The tell is in the name. Natural hematite is only very weakly magnetic and will not cling to your fridge. If beads pull firmly to a magnet or to each other, as these do, the material is the manufactured kind. That is not a defect; it is simply what magnetic hematite is, and we price it accordingly. Many practitioners work it exactly as they would the mined stone. What we will not do is let you buy it believing it came out of the ground.

Natural hematite is one of the classic grounding stones of crystal practice. Cunningham seats the mineral under Saturn and the element of Fire, naming grounding and divination among its powers, and Judy Hall places it at the root. Those associations belong to the mined stone.

Whether they carry over to a manufactured lookalike is a question practitioners genuinely differ on, and we would rather leave it with you than pretend there is a settled answer. Some work magnetic hematite with the full grounding intention and find it serves; others keep it for jewelry and reserve ritual work for mined stone. Both are reasonable. What matters is that you choose knowing which you have.

1. Cleanse it dry. Smoke, sound, or a rest on selenite. Keep it out of salt water and long soaks, which dull the finish.
2. Set an intention. Hold it, breathe, and name what you are wearing it for: grounding, focus, a steady boundary.
3. Wear it as a daily anchor. On the ankle, a small physical reminder you can feel through the day.
4. Take it off to bathe or swim. It holds its mirror finish best kept dry.
5. Roll it on and off. Elastic fails at the stretch, not from age.

Is this real hematite? No. It is magnetic hematite, a manufactured material also called hematine or hemalyke. Its strong magnetism is the giveaway, since natural hematite is only weakly magnetic.

How can I be sure? Hold it to a magnet or a fridge. If it clings firmly, it is the man-made material. Natural hematite will not.

Can I still use it for grounding work? Many practitioners do. Others prefer to work only mined stone. Both positions are reasonable; we would rather you choose knowingly.

Are the magnets strong? They are ordinary bead magnets. If you wear a pacemaker or another sensitive medical device, keep magnetic jewelry away from it as a general precaution.

How do I care for it? Keep it dry, cleanse with smoke or selenite rather than water, and take it off before bathing or swimming.
