Selenite is a crystal form of gypsum, the same mineral used in plaster and sidewalk chalk. Its name comes from the ancient Greek word for the Moon. The silky, white, fibrous kind used for most wands is also called satin spar. Gypsum rates 2 on the Mohs hardness scale and dissolves slowly in water.
