Most of the shiny grey hematite beads on the market are not hematite. The material is generally a synthetic ferrite, and the trade calls it hematine, hemalyke, or magnetic hematite. It is made to look like the natural stone, and it does, very convincingly.

There is one easy way to tell: if it is strongly magnetic, it is not natural hematite. Real hematite is only very weakly magnetic and will not stick to your fridge. If a bead pulls hard to a magnet, it is the man-made material.

We sell it as what it is, and we price it accordingly. Many practitioners work it exactly as they would the natural stone, and there is nothing wrong with that; what we will not do is let you buy it thinking it came out of the ground.

Hematite takes its name from the Greek haima, meaning blood, for the red streak it leaves when ground against a harder stone. The ancient world read that blood-link as power: Roman soldiers are said to have carried hematite for courage before battle, and Cunningham seats the stone under Saturn and the element of Fire, naming grounding and divination among its powers, which places it on Saturday.

In modern crystal practice hematite is one of the great grounding stones, reached for to anchor scattered focus before ritual or to mark a quiet protective boundary through the day. Those associations belong to the mineral; whether they carry over to a manufactured lookalike is a question we will leave to you, since practitioners differ and we would rather you decide than be told.

1. Cleanse it on arrival with smoke, sound, or a rest on selenite. Keep it out of salt water and long soaks, which dull the finish.
2. Hold it, breathe, and name your intention: grounding, focus, a steady boundary for the day.
3. Wear it through the day as a small anchor you can feel on the wrist.
4. Rest the beads at the root centre for chakra work, if that is your practice.
5. Take it off before showering or swimming; it holds its mirror finish best kept dry.

Is this real hematite?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. It is man-made hematite, usually called hematine or hemalyke: a synthetic material engineered to look like the mined stone. It looks the part convincingly, and it is priced as what it is.

How can I tell the difference?

Magnetism. Natural hematite is only very weakly magnetic and will not stick to a fridge. If a bead pulls hard to a magnet, it is the man-made material. This is the quickest test there is.

Can I still work with it?

Many practitioners do, bringing the same grounding and protective intentions to it. Others prefer to work only with mined stone. Both positions are reasonable, and we would rather you choose knowingly.
