Black tourmaline's place in the protection file is modern rather than ancient: the stone came to Europe through Dutch traders in the 1700s, valued then for its pyroelectric charge, and its warding reputation was fixed in the twentieth century by Cunningham, Judy Hall, and the writers who followed them.
