Moldavite has no folk tradition behind it. It does not appear in Cunningham, it has no planetary or elemental attribution in the older sources, and no grandmother anywhere passed down a working for it. Its reputation is entirely a product of the late twentieth century, when it entered the crystal trade and acquired, very quickly, a reputation as the most intense stone on the shelf.

What practitioners describe is disruption rather than comfort. Moldavite is not spoken of as a soothing stone. In the modern literature it is associated with acceleration, with sudden and often unwelcome change, with the collapse of arrangements that were not working and the sharp clarity that follows. The lore around the so-called moldavite flush, a heat or pressure some people report on first contact, is exactly that: lore. We report it as something practitioners say, not as something we are claiming will happen to you.

People who work with it tend to advise pairing it with something grounding, and to advise not wearing it to sleep in. That is the tradition's own caution, and it is worth respecting even if you hold the whole thing lightly.

1. Start short. Practitioners near-universally advise brief contact at first rather than sustained wear, particularly if you are working with it for the first time.
2. Ground alongside it. Black tourmaline, hematite, or simply a hand on the floor. The common instruction is to anchor before you accelerate.
3. Keep it on the altar rather than the bedside. The standing advice is not to sleep with it, and it comes from enough directions to be worth taking seriously.
4. Handle it as glass. Moldavite is brittle and the etched surface is fragile. It chips. Store it where it will not knock against harder stones.
5. Clean it dry. Smoke, sound, or moonlight. It does not need water and it does not need salt, which will abrade the surface texture that makes it worth having.

The Ries impact happened roughly fifteen million years ago in what is now Bavaria. The crater is still there, about fifteen miles across, with the town of Nordlingen sitting inside it. The energy of the strike vaporized and melted the surface rock, and some of that melt was thrown hundreds of kilometers east, cooling into glass as it went.

Bohemian farmers turned the pieces up in their fields for centuries. They appear in Stone Age sites as amulets and worked pieces, which makes moldavite one of the older human curiosities in Europe even though its modern spiritual reputation is only decades old. It was formally described in 1786, and in 1900 it acquired the name moldavite from the Moldau.

How can I tell if a piece of moldavite is genuine? Three checks. Specific gravity: real moldavite runs about 2.32 to 2.40, while common green bottle glass runs closer to 2.5, and a kitchen scale plus water displacement will get you close enough to catch a fake. Surface: genuine pieces have a hackly, wrinkled, deeply etched skin, where fakes tend to be smooth and may show mold seams. Inclusions: under magnification, real moldavite shows elongated, wormlike silica threads and irregular bubbles, while glass fakes show perfectly round bubbles. Price is the fourth tell. Genuine moldavite is expensive because it is finite, and anything priced far below the market rate is telling you something.

Is moldavite a meteorite? No, and this is the most common error about it. The material is terrestrial rock, melted by an impact and thrown clear. Nothing extraterrestrial is in your hand. What arrived from space was the energy, not the substance.

Is it a crystal? No. It is glass, amorphous, with no lattice. The trade calls it a crystal out of habit.
