• Hematite rings are brittle and will crack or snap if dropped on a hard floor, knocked against something, or forced over a knuckle. This is normal for the material rather than a defect.
• Never clean these with salt water. Salt attacks iron and will corrode and pit the stone. Cleanse dry only.
• Keep dry generally. Repeated wetting causes rust spotting and dulls the polish. Remove before washing up, showering, and swimming.
• Genuine hematite is only weakly magnetic. Strongly magnetic rings are hematine, a manufactured material; if any ring you own is strongly magnetic, keep it away from pacemakers and implanted medical devices.

Hematite takes its name from the Greek for blood, because of the red streak it leaves when scraped against unglazed stone. Powdered hematite ochre appears in burials and cave painting across a vast stretch of prehistory, which is genuinely ancient use, though it was pigment and ritual color rather than jewelry in any modern sense.

Contemporary practice works hematite almost universally as a grounding stone, and the reason is not obscure: it is heavy, cool, and dense, and you notice it on your hand. A ring is a small, constant dose of that, which is why they get worn daily rather than saved for ritual.

The widespread idea that a broken hematite ring absorbed something on your behalf is modern folklore rather than inherited tradition. Physically, it means the stone is brittle and took a knock. A good many practitioners find the first reading meaningful anyway, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you know which is which.

1. Cleanse dry before first wear: smoke, sound, moonlight, or a selenite plate. Never salt water, and never a plain water soak.
2. Ease the ring on rather than forcing it. Most breakages happen during a determined push over a knuckle.
3. Wear one or stack several, and let the weight and coolness do the reminding rather than holding an intention consciously all day.
4. Take them off for washing up, showers, swimming, and any work where your hands take knocks.
5. Store the spares somewhere dry. Fifty rings in a damp drawer will spot with rust.

Flat or rounded, which should I choose?

Flat bands sit flush against the finger and stack more cleanly; rounded bands sit slightly proud and catch light differently. Neither is stronger than the other, since brittleness comes from the stone rather than the shape.
