Hematite's name comes from the Greek for blood, because of the red streak the stone leaves when scraped. Powdered hematite ochre appears in burials and cave painting across an enormous stretch of prehistory, which is genuinely ancient use, though it was pigment and ritual color rather than jewelry as we would recognize it.

Modern practice works hematite almost universally as a grounding stone, and the reason is straightforward: it is dense and you can feel it. A ring is a small dose of that, which is part of the appeal of stacking several.

Worth mentioning honestly, since it comes up constantly with hematite rings: the widespread idea that a ring breaking means it absorbed something on your behalf is modern folklore rather than an inherited belief. What it means physically is that hematite is brittle. Plenty of practitioners find the first reading meaningful anyway, and there is no harm in that as long as you know which is which.

1. Cleanse dry before first wear. Smoke, sound, moonlight, or a selenite plate. Skip water and salt water, both of which attack iron.
2. Wear one, or stack several, and let the weight and the coolness be the reminder rather than trying to hold an intention consciously.
3. Ease the ring on rather than forcing it. Most breakages happen during a determined push over a knuckle.
4. Take them off for washing up, showers, swimming, and any manual work where your hands will take knocks.

Why did my ring break?

Does a broken ring mean something?
