Bathing with intention runs through nearly every tradition that has water and a tub: the mikveh, the spiritual baths of Hoodoo and the botanica, the herb baths of European folk practice. The logic is always the same, and it is a good one: the body is the thing you actually live in, and washing is a thing you do to it deliberately. Whatever you name while you are in the water goes on you rather than merely being thought about.

Aimed at love, the bath is best worked toward yourself: your own openness, your own readiness, your own sense of being worth loving. That is not a consolation prize.
