It is worth being straightforward about two of the three items. White sage, Salvia apiana, is native to Southern California and Baja and has been used ceremonially by the Chumash, Cahuilla, and other Indigenous peoples for generations; its popularity in the spiritual market has created real conservation pressure and real questions about appropriation. Palo santo, holy wood, has been burned across parts of South America for cleansing, and the tree is protected in places, so the kind version of the practice uses wood gathered from naturally fallen, aged trees. Those traditions belong to those communities and are theirs to teach.

Rose quartz is the heart stone of modern crystal practice, tied to love and gentle warmth, and it carries no such history; it is simply a pink stone that practice has assigned to the heart. Together the three clear a space, freshen it, and give you something to hold while you name what you are inviting. The smoke does not act on its own; it clears the air and helps you settle into your own intention.

1. Ready a dish. Work over a heat-safe dish on a stable surface, and open a window so cleared air has somewhere to go.
2. Light the sage. Light the tip, let it catch, then blow it out so it smolders, and waft the smoke through the space.
3. Light the palo santo. Once the space is cleared, light the palo santo the same way to bless and lift it.
4. Set the heart intention. Hold the rose quartz and name the love you are inviting.
5. Extinguish safely. Press the sage and palo santo out fully when finished, and never leave them burning unattended.

How do I burn it safely?

Work over a heat-safe dish in a ventilated room, keep it away from anything flammable, press the sticks out fully when finished, and never leave them unattended.
