Few stones carry a deeper human history. The mines at Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan have produced lapis for more than six thousand years, feeding it along trade routes to Mesopotamia, Egypt, and eventually Greece and Rome. Egypt called it chesbet and set it into the burial mask of Tutankhamun; ground and refined, it became ultramarine, the pigment medieval painters paid more than its weight in gold to lay on the robes of the divine.

Cunningham seats lapis under Venus and the element of Water, naming psychic ability, courage, and love among its powers, and Judy Hall places it at the third eye. Modern practice keeps it as the stone of truth and inner sight: the one you reach for when you want to know what you actually think, underneath what you think you should think. 1. Cleanse them with smoke, moonlight, or sound; skip prolonged soaking, since water damages calcite and rusts pyrite.

4. Anchor a grid with a larger piece and ring it with the smaller ones.

What are the gold and white flecks?

Gold pyrite and white calcite, both ordinary inclusions in genuine lapis. They are signs of a natural stone rather than flaws.

Will my pieces look like the photo?

Each bag holds six to eleven free-shape pieces totaling about a kilogram, and every piece is its own size and pattern.

Is the lapis dyed?

No. Genuine lapis carries its color naturally, and the pyrite and calcite show it. Much cheap blue stone is dyed howlite, which tends to look uniformly blue with no pyrite.

How do I care for it?

Keep it out of prolonged water and salt, which damage the softer calcite and rust the pyrite. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and cleanse with smoke or moonlight.
