Few stones carry a deeper human history. The mines at Sar-e-Sang in Badakhshan have produced lapis for more than six thousand years, feeding it along trade routes to Mesopotamia, Egypt, and eventually Greece and Rome. Egypt called it chesbet and set it into the burial mask of Tutankhamun; ground and refined, it became ultramarine, the pigment medieval painters paid more than its weight in gold to lay on the robes of the divine.

What are the gold and white flecks?

Is the lapis dyed?

No. Genuine lapis carries its color naturally, and the pyrite and calcite show it. Much cheap blue stone is dyed howlite, which tends to look uniformly blue with no pyrite.

How do I care for it?

Keep it out of prolonged water and salt, which damage the softer calcite and rust the pyrite. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and cleanse with smoke or moonlight.
