The hamsa is among the oldest protective emblems still in daily use: the open right palm of Middle Eastern and North African tradition, carried across millennia and honored today in living communities as the Hand of Miriam in Jewish tradition and the Hand of Fatima in Islamic tradition, hung at doors and worn at necks as a guard against ill will and the evil eye.
