Henna, mehndi, lalle: the plant and the practice belong to a very large stretch of the world, across South Asia, the Arabian peninsula, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Levant, with continuous documented use going back thousands of years. It marks weddings, births, Eid, harvests, and the passages in between, and in a great many of those settings the application itself is a communal event rather than a solo craft project.

1. Patch test first, on the inner forearm, and wait a full day. Do this even if you have used henna before, since formulations differ.
2. Wash and dry the skin thoroughly. Do not moisturize beforehand; oils and lotions block the stain.
3. Snip the tip small and apply your design in a raised line, working from the top down so you do not drag your hand through wet paste.
4. Let it dry undisturbed for several hours. The longer the paste stays in contact, the deeper the stain. Overnight gives the strongest result.
5. Scrape the dried paste off rather than washing it off, and keep the area away from water for as long as you can manage afterward. The stain darkens over the next 24 to 48 hours.

How long does the stain last?

Usually one to three weeks, depending on where it sits. Hands and feet hold it longest because the skin is thickest there. Anywhere that gets washed, rubbed, or exfoliated regularly will fade faster. The stain leaves as the skin naturally renews.

Why is my stain orange rather than dark?

Because it is fresh. Henna oxidizes, and the color deepens over the 24 to 48 hours after you remove the paste. Judge the result on day two, not on the first hour. Warmth and leaving the paste on longer both help.

Is this black henna?

No, and you should be wary of anything that is. Natural henna stains orange to brown, never black. Pastes marketed as black henna often contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that causes severe reactions and permanent scarring on skin. Color is the tell.

Do I really need to patch test?

Yes. It costs you a day and it is the only way to find out how your own skin responds before you commit to a design on a visible spot. Test on the inner forearm, wait a full 24 hours, and check the site carefully.

Can I use it on my hair?

No. Hair henna is a different preparation entirely, mixed and applied differently. This is body art paste and it is sold for use on skin. Using it on hair will not give you a usable or predictable result.
