Skullcap takes its name from the helmet-shaped calyx of its small blue flowers, and its folk file from two registers that turn out to be one: peace and fidelity. Cunningham's herbal files it for love, fidelity, and peace, the herb sewn into a partner's pillow in the old custom to keep vows warm, and worked into the calm-sachets and dream pillows of the rest-seeking practice. The mint-family plant is North America's own, long gathered along its streambanks. We sell it for the sachet and the pillow rather than the teacup, plainly, as we do across the herb shelf. The leaf keeps no promises on its own; it carries the tradition's gentlest pairing, calm and constancy, into the small cloth workings where both are tended.
