Rudraksha, the seed of Elaeocarpus trees, holds a revered place in Hindu and particularly Shaiva devotion: the name means Rudra's tears, the seeds held in tradition to have sprung from the compassionate weeping of Shiva, and malas strung from them have counted mantra repetitions for many centuries. Japa, the practice the strand is built for, moves one bead per recitation, thumb and middle finger drawing the strand through a round of the mantra. This mala spaces the seeds with clear quartz, and the deeper protocols of rudraksha, the mukhi facets, the consecrations, the initiatory uses, belong to the tradition's own teachers, which we say plainly rather than paraphrase. The strand counts the prayers; the devotion, as ever, is the practitioner's.
