The skull is one of the oldest and most universal symbols human beings have, and its meaning is remarkably stable across cultures: mortality, and the memento mori it demands. From the skulls on medieval tomb carvings to the vanitas paintings of the seventeenth century to the ofrendas of Dia de los Muertos, the skull is the reminder that you will die, and therefore the reminder to attend to what matters while you do not.

On a working altar a skull sits in that tradition. It is a focus for shadow work, for ancestor remembrance, for the parts of practice that face endings and transformation rather than growth and beginnings. The alchemical markings extend the theme: alchemy's nigredo, the blackening, was the stage of dissolution and death from which transformation was said to begin.

The object itself is decor, and we will not tell you it protects or aligns anything on its own. What it does is hold a theme in the room. A memento mori works by being looked at, and a skull on a shelf is a quietly effective one.

1. Set it where it will be seen. A memento mori only works if it catches your eye. A shelf at sitting height, an altar, a desk.
2. Use it as a shadow-work focus. For the parts of practice that deal with endings, grief, fear, and the things usually looked away from.
3. Keep it for ancestor work. A skull is a natural focus for remembrance and for honouring the dead, at Samhain or year-round.
4. Dust it with a dry brush. The etched detail holds dust; a soft brush reaches into the markings.
5. Keep it off the floor and off hard edges. Resin is durable but the finish scratches.

Does it protect my space? It is a decorative focal object, and we will not claim it does anything on its own. What it does is hold a theme, mortality and transformation, in the room, which is the traditional function of a memento mori.
