Myrrh is one of the oldest sacred resins, burned since antiquity in the temples and tombs of the ancient Near East and Egypt. Scott Cunningham places myrrh under the Moon and the element of Water, naming protection, purification, healing, and spirituality among its powers. Its deep, warm, slightly bitter smoke has long been reached for to consecrate a space, deepen prayer and meditation, and form a protective, grounding atmosphere. Burned as pure resin on a charcoal disc, that ancient temple smoke comes through at its fullest. The incense does not act on its own; it deepens and steadies the air and helps you settle into your own intention. Burn a little to protect and purify a space, consecrate your tools, or ground a meditation.

1. Ready a censer. Half-fill a heatproof censer or dish with sand or ash, set on a stable, fireproof surface.
2. Light a charcoal disc. Hold a charcoal tablet with tongs and light it, then set it on the sand and let it ash over and glow.
3. Add the resin. Sprinkle a small pinch of myrrh resin onto the hot charcoal; it will smoke quickly. Add more a pinch at a time as you name your intention.
4. Burn it safely. Keep it attended and ventilated, never leave it unattended, and let the charcoal cool completely before discarding.
