The triquetra, the three-cornered knot, is a genuinely old motif from insular Celtic and early medieval art, where interlace of this kind appears throughout the manuscript and stone-carving traditions. Its "three in one" reading has been given many meanings over the centuries, Christian trinity, maiden-mother-crone, land-sea-sky, and modern Pagan practice has taken it up warmly. We would rather name that honestly than assign it a single ancient meaning it never had; the knot is old, its interpretations are various, and both facts are part of its appeal.
