A pendulum answers by small movements of your own hand that you do not consciously make. That is the ideomotor effect, it is real and well documented, and knowing it does not spoil the practice: what surfaces is still yours, and a tool that surfaces it is doing something useful.

What a mat adds is structure. An unanchored swing means whatever you decide it means afterward, which is the fastest way to fool yourself. A printed board makes you commit in advance to what each direction signifies, and that constraint is the whole value. The lunar phases give you a ready frame: building, culminating, releasing, resting.

1. Lay the mat flat and settle somewhere you will not be jostled.
2. Establish your signals first: hold the pendulum still and ask it to show you yes, then no.
3. Place a card, a stone, or a written question in the blank center if the working calls for one.
4. Ask a clear question and let the pendulum move on its own rather than steering it.
5. Read the swing against the mat, and write down what you asked and what came back.
