Kyanite is a modern arrival on the crystal shelf rather than an old folk stone; it appears in no Cunningham entry, and we file its attributions as contemporary. What modern practice has fastened on is a real physical peculiarity: the crystal grows in long, flat blades with a strongly directional structure, and the tradition reads that as a stone that moves things along rather than holding them. From this comes kyanite's signature claim, that it never needs cleansing, since it is said not to accumulate what passes through it. Whatever you make of that, it is why kyanite is the one stone most practitioners never put out in the moonlight.

Judy Hall's Crystal Bible places kyanite at the throat chakra, and practice keeps it for clear speaking and clear seeing: saying the true thing, and knowing what the true thing is. The palm-stone form adds the plainest posture in the practice, a stone closed in the hand while you sit, walk, or wait. It is the crystal shelf's most honest object, asking nothing but to be held.

Does kyanite really not need cleansing?

That is the claim modern crystal practice makes for it, on the reasoning that its bladed structure moves energy along rather than holding it. It is a contemporary attribution rather than old lore. If you would rather cleanse it, a rinse and dry does no harm.

What is kyanite kept for?

Why is it so soft?

Kyanite has unusual directional hardness, much harder across the blade than along it, which is why it splits and chips along its length. Handle it gently and keep it away from harder stones.
