The dreamcatcher began with the Ojibwe, or Anishinaabe, who hung a woven hoop above a sleeping place so that, in the traditional telling, the web would catch bad dreams while the good ones slipped through. Over the last century the form spread widely and became one of the most recognized pieces of folk craft anywhere, which is not an unmixed blessing: the dreamcatcher belongs to a living people, and its meaning is theirs rather than the market's.
