Powerfully, deliberately foul. This is the most pungent thing in most people's cabinets. The smell is the working, and anyone expecting a pleasant herb should look elsewhere.

A pinch goes a very long way. An ounce will outlast most practitioners' needs by a wide margin. Overuse is far more common than running short.

Asafoetida sits in several living traditions at once. In Hoodoo and conjure it is a well-known banishing and uncrossing material, worked into powders laid at doors, added to bottles, or burned to drive something out, and it carries the plain reputation of being harsh medicine for harsh problems. In South Asia, hing is both a kitchen staple and a household protective substance, hung at doorways and used in folk practice for warding, particularly around infants.

Both of those are traditions with people in them, and the second in particular is a practice we are not positioned to instruct anyone in. Where a use is taught within a family, a house, or a lineage, that teaching is the right source rather than a shop page.

The common thread across all of it is straightforward and does not require initiation to grasp: things recoil from this smell, and practitioners have worked with that fact for a very long time.

1. Work outdoors or in a well ventilated space, and give yourself somewhere to put the jar down that you do not mind smelling afterward.
2. For threshold work, a pinch is laid or dusted at a doorway or along a boundary line, usually with a spoken petition naming what is being sent off.
3. For bottle and packet work, a small amount is added among other materials rather than used alone. It is a strong voice in a mix and does not need volume.
4. If burning, use a very small quantity on charcoal and expect the smoke to be genuinely unpleasant. Ventilate, and do not do this in a room you intend to sit in afterward.
5. Seal the jar immediately and store it away from everything else. Practitioners who skip this step learn quickly.

Is this the same as the hing sold for cooking?

Botanically it is the same resin, but this is sold and stocked for ritual use rather than as a food product. We do not supply preparation or consumption guidance for it. If you want asafoetida for cooking, buy it from a food supplier.

Does it contain wheat?

How bad is the smell, really?

Worse than you are imagining. Sulfurous and oniony, and it clings to fabric, wood, and skin. Store it double-sealed and well away from food. This is genuinely the most pungent thing many practitioners own.

Can I burn it as incense?

You can, in very small amounts on charcoal, and some traditions do. Ventilate heavily and accept that the room will be unusable for a while. Most practitioners find laying or dusting it more practical than burning.

How should I store it?

Sealed, then sealed again inside a second container, somewhere cool and away from anything that absorbs odor. An outbuilding or garage shelf is a common solution. The powder itself keeps well; the problem is entirely containment.
