Agate is one of the oldest worked stones there is, and it turns up as beads, seals, and amulets across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Its reputation is consistently as a steadying, protective material rather than a dramatic one, which suits a stone that is common, tough, and unshowy.

The roller bottle itself is thoroughly modern. It comes out of the aromatherapy trade in the last few decades, and the crystal-ball version is newer still. There is no tradition of applying oils with a stone roller, and we would rather say that than dress up a manufacturing format as inherited practice.

What is genuinely old is anointing: applying prepared oil to the body deliberately, at named points, as part of a working. That runs through an enormous range of traditions. The bottle is a tidy way of doing something people have long done with a fingertip.

1. Wash and dry the bottle thoroughly before the first fill. Water left inside will spoil an oil blend.
2. Fill with a carrier oil, adding essential oils only at a properly diluted concentration rather than neat.
3. Label it. A blend you were sure you would recognize in three months will not be recognizable in three months.
4. Apply at pulse points, or wherever your practice anoints, rolling slowly enough that the stone makes contact rather than skating over the skin.
5. Store upright and out of direct sunlight, and cleanse the bottle itself if you dedicate it to a particular working.

Does it come with oil in it?

No, it arrives empty for you to fill. That is deliberate, since most people buying a roller bottle already have something specific in mind or want to blend their own.

Can I put undiluted essential oil in it?

Please do not. Essential oils should be diluted in a carrier such as fractionated coconut or jojoba before skin contact. Neat oils can irritate or sensitize skin, and some are considerably worse than others.

Is the red agate dyed?

Very likely. Most red agate in the trade is dyed or heat treated, which is an old and accepted practice rather than a fake. Naturally deep red agate exists but is far less common than the material sold under the name.

How do I clean it between blends?

Pop the roller housing out, wash both parts in hot soapy water, then wipe with rubbing alcohol if the previous contents were strongly scented. Dry everything completely before refilling.

Will the ball fall out?

Not in normal use. The housing grips it firmly and is designed to be removed deliberately for cleaning and filling. If you do pop it out, press it back until it seats fully before turning the bottle over.
