The cauldron is one of the craft's foundational vessels: the pot of transformation in Celtic myth, Cerridwen's brewing place of wisdom, and the practical hearth-tool that folk practice never stopped using. On the modern altar it does the work of burning, blending, and containing: loose incense on charcoal, petition papers, herb blends, the small fires that carry intention into smoke. The triple moon on its face sets it in the Goddess's register, maiden, mother, and crone over the vessel of change. Cast iron earns its place honestly here: it takes live heat without complaint, which no decorative bowl can promise. The cauldron does not act on its own; it holds the fire you tend.

• Resin or loose incense: Add half an inch of sand, set a lit charcoal tablet on it, and sprinkle resin a pinch at a time.
• Cone incense: Set the cone on a little sand so the base doesn't scorch the iron.
• A wish or a release: Burn a written petition, a bay leaf or a name you're letting go, at the new or full moon or whenever you need to.
• A candle in sand: Stand a chime candle upright in sand. Some households light it to stand for the fire of creation.
• Watching a spell come together: Add each ingredient in order and picture the working forming as you go.
• Altar offerings, salt by the door, or crystals: Use it as a small holding dish anywhere in the house.
• Mixing herbs, salts or bath blends: Combine them in it before you use them.
• On a water altar: Set it out as decor on an altar for the water element.
• The lid: Keep it nearby. Setting it on smothers a flame that climbs too high.

3. Use the lid to snuff. Lowering it ends a burn cleanly without water.
4. Keep it dry and lightly seasoned. A thin wipe of oil after cleaning keeps rust away.

Can I burn charcoal and resin in it?

Yes: cast iron takes live charcoal. Use a bed of sand or salt, stand it on a trivet, and let everything cool before touching.

How do I keep it from rusting?

Keep it dry, wipe out ash when cool, and rub a thin coat of oil on the iron now and then, the same care as any cast iron.
