Brazilian agate. Brazil is the world's main source of the banded agate geodes that the lapidary trade cuts and treats.

Aura-treated druzy. The iridescent metallic finish is a vapour-deposition coating on the natural crystal crust, applied for colour. It is decorative, permanent under normal handling, and not a natural mineral surface.

A geode is a stone that is hollow, and that is the whole of its symbolism. Something ordinary on the outside, unremarkable enough to walk past, opens to a cavity full of crystal. Every tradition that has looked at a geode has read the same thing into it: that the interior is not the exterior, that what is hidden may be finer than what shows, and that finding out requires breaking something open.

Agate itself is the workhorse of the chalcedony family, worked in folk practice for steadiness and for grounding, and it has been carved and worn for that purpose since antiquity. It is not a dramatic stone and it does not pretend to be.

The crescent cut is a modern lapidary decision rather than a traditional form, and the aura coating is a modern process. We are not going to attach ancient authority to either. What you have is a genuinely beautiful object, honestly described, and there is no shame in wanting a beautiful object.

1. Stand it where light reaches it. The coating is iridescent and it needs light to do anything. In a dark corner it is just a grey rock.
2. Use it as a lunar marker. The crescent cut makes it a natural altar piece for moon work, whatever you think of the coating.
3. Do not cleanse it with salt or abrasives. The coating is a thin bonded layer. Salt scrubs, and it will dull it. Smoke, sound, or moonlight only.
4. Keep it out of the dishwasher and away from ultrasonic cleaners. Which sounds obvious, and is nonetheless where treated stones go to die.
5. Handle the druzy gently. The crystal points are small and they snap. Pick it up by the body, not the crust.

Is the rainbow colour natural? No. Agate druzy is naturally white, grey, or clear. The metallic iridescence is an applied coating, made by bonding a vapourised metal to the crystal surface. The stone underneath is genuine agate; the colour on top is not something the earth did.

Does that make it fake? No, and we would not sell it if we thought so. It is a real Brazilian agate geode with a decorative treatment, which is a completely ordinary product in the lapidary trade. What would be wrong is not telling you.

Will the coating wear off? It is bonded to the surface and stable under normal handling and display. It will not survive salt, abrasives, ultrasonic cleaning, or scrubbing.

Will it look like the photo? Not exactly. Banding, crystal size, and the way the iridescence catches all vary from piece to piece.

What if I want untreated agate? Buy the natural tumbled agate instead. It has no coating and no treatment, and we would rather point you to it than sell you something you did not want.
