Myrrh's association is with purification and with death, and the two are not separate. The Egyptians used it in embalming; the word myrrh reaches English through Greek from a Semitic root meaning bitter. It burned in temples, it was carried in funeral processions, and it was one of the gifts brought to the infant in the Gospel account, where its meaning is unmistakable to anyone who knows what myrrh is for: gold for a king, frankincense for a god, and myrrh for a man who is going to die.

That is the register it works in. Myrrh is not a bright resin and it does not do bright work. It is burned for cleansing, for protection, for grief, for endings, and for the passing over of things. Practitioners reach for it when something needs to be closed, released, or laid down properly.

It pairs almost universally with frankincense, and the pairing is not decorative. Frankincense lifts and myrrh grounds; one is the smoke going up and the other is the earth it rises from.

1. Dress a candle. Anoint a black or white candle for cleansing, banishing, or a working around grief and endings.
2. Anoint tools. A drop on a blade, a wand, or a censer as part of consecrating it.
3. Mark a threshold. Myrrh is a purifying and protective resin, and its oil is worked at doors the same way its smoke is.
4. Work it for endings. Funerals, ancestor work, releasing rituals, the closing of something that needs to be closed. This is the oil's own register and it does that work well.
5. Do not put it in the bath undiluted. It is a fragrance oil, not a bath preparation, and undiluted fragrance oil on wet skin is a good way to get a rash.
