Chinese green jade. The classic, in 4mm, 8mm, and 10mm gauges. This is the jade most people mean: green, waxy in the hand, worn continuously rather than saved for occasions. Best if you want the stone with its full traditional weight behind it.

Nephrite. True nephrite in tumbled nugget form, the same species worked in China from the Neolithic onward. Best for anyone who wants certainty about what the stone is.

Coloured jades. Butter yellow, red, and purple strands. These are jade-family or jade-adjacent stones in colours the tradition did not centre on, and affordable examples are frequently colour-enhanced. Best if the colour is what draws you.

Trade-name stones. New jade and snake dragon jade are names the trade uses for serpentine and related green stones rather than for nephrite or jadeite. We say so on the product pages. Best for anyone who likes the look and wants the honest label with it.

How to Choose

Start with green or not green. Green jade carries the fortune and virtue associations that make jade what it is in Chinese tradition, running unbroken from the Neolithic through the imperial period. The coloured varieties sit at the edge of that story and are worn more for the colour than the lineage, which is a perfectly good reason.

Then gauge. 4mm is fine enough to stack or wear under a cuff, 8mm is the everyday middle, 10mm has real presence on the wrist. Jade traditions tend to favour long continuous wear over occasional use, so pick the one you will actually keep on.

Jade sold in this format is most often nephrite or a nephrite-family stone. Jadeite is rarer and considerably more expensive. Where we know the species we name it on the product page; if you need certainty for a specific piece, ask before ordering.

Is red or purple jade a natural colour?

Jade occurs in more than green, but affordable red and purple strands are frequently colour-enhanced. We would rather tell you that than let the colour speak for itself.

What is new jade?

A trade name for serpentine, a different mineral with a similar pale green look. It is a real stone with its own history; it simply is not jade, and we do not pretend otherwise.

What is jade traditionally associated with?
