The paper talisman is one of Western magic's oldest and most democratic workings: a symbol drawn or printed, an aim inscribed, and the whole sealed and carried or kept. Grimoires filled pages with such designs, and the practice survives because it needs nothing but paper, intent, and a steady hand. The pentacle makes a natural talisman base, the five elements crowned by spirit and bound in the circle, a sign of completeness under which to write what you are working toward. The singed edge is the traditional seal, fire closing what ink opened. The talisman focuses your own intention rather than acting on its own; the aim you write, and the work you do toward it, remain the working.

1. Cut along the dashed line to free the talisman from the sheet.
2. Center yourself and write your aim on the talisman, plainly and in your own words.
3. Seal it with care. Singe the edge briefly over a fire-safe dish, water at hand, never leaving flame unattended.
4. Keep it purposefully. Altar, wallet, or charm bag, until the aim is met.

Do I have to cut it?

No. It hangs handsomely whole; the dashed line is an invitation, not a requirement.

Cut it free, write your aim on it, seal the edge with a careful singe, and keep it until the work is done: the classic paper-talisman method.

Is the singeing safe?

Done carefully: brief, over a fire-safe dish, with water at hand, and never unattended. A barely-kissed edge seals as well as a dramatic one.
