Charcoal and resin is incense in its oldest form. Long before sticks and cones, frankincense, myrrh, and copal were burned over coals in temple censers, and the home charcoal burner keeps that lineage on the altar: the disc glows, the resin melts, and the smoke rises the way it has for thousands of years. The stars pierced through this screen add the night sky's register to the work, the ember winking through them as it burns. 1. Lay a heat bed. Pour a layer of sand or ash into the metal tray to buffer the heat from the base.
2. Light the disc. Hold a self-igniting charcoal disc with tongs and light its edge; let the sparkle cross it and the surface grey.
3. Feed it resin. Add a small pinch of resin or powder to the glowing disc, set the starry screen in place, and let the smoke rise.
4. Cool before touching. The screen and tray stay hot well after the burn; let everything cool fully, then empty the ash and wipe clean. Burn in a ventilated space and never leave it unattended.

What kind of charcoal does it take?

Standard self-igniting charcoal discs sold for incense. Light one with tongs, let it grey over, and it is ready for resin.

Why the sand layer?

A bed of sand or ash in the tray spreads and buffers the disc's heat, protecting the burner and the surface under it.

Can I burn incense sticks in it?

It is built for charcoal and resin. Sticks want a holder or ash catcher instead.

How do I clean it?

Let it cool completely, empty the ash and spent charcoal, and wipe the tray and screen with a dry cloth.
