It is worth being straightforward here. Directing smoke with a feather, over a person or through a space, is central to the ceremonial practice of many Indigenous North American nations, where the feather itself often carries deep significance and the smudging ceremony has its own protocols, its own preparation, and its own authority. Those traditions belong to those communities, and they are not ours to teach or to sell.

What is offered here is a tool. Burning herbs and moving the smoke through a space is something a great many traditions do, from European folk practice to the household incense of half the world, and a feather is simply an efficient way to move air. If you use one, use it knowing what it resembles, and learn the ceremony from the people whose ceremony it is rather than from a product page.

1. Work over a heat-safe dish, with the bundle or resin already lit and smoldering.
2. Hold the feather by the wrapped handle and fan the smoke gently; a little movement does a lot.
3. Move deliberately: along walls, into corners, and toward an open window or door if you are clearing.
4. Keep the feather out of the ember. Feathers scorch fast and smell terrible when they do.
5. Store them somewhere dry and flat, and keep them out of long sun.
