Few bumper stickers have a documented birthplace, but this one does: Anne Herbert, a Bay Area writer, coined it on a restaurant placemat in 1982 as the deliberate inversion of the news phrase "random violence and senseless acts of cruelty." The line escaped into the wild, essays, refrigerator doors, a book, an entire kindness movement, precisely because it reframes goodness as something you can commit like mischief: unplanned, unearned, and delightful to get away with.
