Palo santo, whose name means holy wood, comes from the dry forests of South America, where it has long been burned in cleansing and ceremonial practice to clear heavy or stagnant energy, ground the body, and lift the spirit. Burned as resin on a charcoal disc, its sweet, woody, faintly citrus smoke comes through at its fullest. Palo santo is best gathered from naturally fallen wood, and the tree is protected in some regions; please choose responsibly sourced supply and burn it mindfully. 1. Ready a censer. Half-fill a heatproof censer or dish with sand or ash, set on a stable, fireproof surface.
2. Light a charcoal disc. Hold a charcoal tablet with tongs and light it, then set it on the sand and let it ash over and glow.
3. Add the resin. Sprinkle a small pinch of palo santo resin onto the hot charcoal; it will smoke quickly. Add more a pinch at a time as you name your intention.
4. Burn it safely. Keep it attended and ventilated, never leave it unattended, and let the charcoal cool completely before discarding.
