The Morrigan is one of the great goddesses of Irish myth: a figure of war, fate, sovereignty, and death, appearing across the Ulster Cycle and often in the form of a raven or crow over the battlefield. She is sometimes a single goddess and sometimes a trio, and among her most striking images is the washer at the ford, seen cleaning the bloodied garments of those about to die, an omen of fate rather than a bringer of it.
