Cunningham places marshmallow under Venus and the element of Water, with two powers: protection, and the drawing in of good spirits. That second one is the more distinctive. Where many herbs are worked to banish and repel, marshmallow belongs to the smaller group worked to invite and welcome: set out to draw helpful and benevolent presences toward a working rather than to push harmful ones away.

Its softness is the through-line. This is the root that made a soothing confection and a soothing poultice, and its magical character keeps that gentleness: protective without being fierce, welcoming rather than warding. It is a herb for the kind of altar work that is trying to build a hospitable space rather than defend a besieged one.

Can I make tea with this? This is sold as a ritual herb, and we give no internal-use instructions. Marshmallow root has a long history as a herbal preparation, but any such use is a matter for a qualified herbalist, not a product page. We keep this to external ritual work.

Is this the marshmallow the candy is named after? Yes. The original marshmallow confection was made from the mucilage of this root. The modern sweet no longer contains any.
